California Trip Recap: Part 1
Oct 1st, 2008 by Tony and Louisa
Now that we have finally got all the photos posted (it only took a month :-)), here is a small recap of our trip:

We started the trip at San Francisco, including the Bay and Alcatraz. After a nice, seasick-free, boat ride to the island, we enjoyed a walk on Alcatraz Island and in the prison. If you have time to do the audio tour, I’d definitely recommend it. You travel the same route through the prison that the inmates traveled.
We had some time to enjoy yummy food both before and after the boat ride; clam chowder and a Crab Louis sandwich, followed by steak and chowder and garlic bread at a high-class diner.

We enjoyed our walk back to the BART system, and then drove to our hotel just outside of San Francisco. The hotel was just over the Golden Gate Bridge, which was covered in fog.

The next morning we got up early while there was still fog and drove to Point Reyes National Seashore. We heard but didn’t see several sea lions, and also stopped at a few of the coastal beaches. We had some fun playing in the quite chilly water, and watched the people fishing along the beach. Many of them propped their poles in the sand, and then proceeded to relax in lawn chairs while they waited for a bite.

On the gorgeous drive back, we stopped at a cute little bakery for fabulous pastries and coffee. We also stopped at Muir Woods to check out the giant redwoods. After the forest, we drove to our next hotel. The drive took us through Oakland, and then over to a small town about an hour outside of Yosemite National Park.

The next morning we got up early, got breakfast at the hotel restaurant, and drove to Yosemite. The sun was just rising; of course, we were driving east, which means that it was quite a bright but pretty drive. We stayed at the Yosemite Lodge, and had a corner room with a view of El Capitan.

The first day at Yosemite, we drove along the Tioga Pass road, and climbed one of the domes towards the end of the road. The granite dome provided us nice 280 degree views (we couldn’t quite see all the way around, but the view we did have was wonderful).
