San Isabel National Forest - Leadville, CO

Today’s post comes from a weekend camping trip at the base of both Mount Elbert and Mount Massive in the San Isabel National Forest. After getting the invite to head out to to camp (thanks Tom!), we started out on our trek. Our plans were soon turned upside down when I-70 ground to a halt due to an overturned tractor trailer. While no one was seriously injured, the traffic jam was horrendous, so we took a roundabout route… which connected with I-70 about 1/4 mile from the site of the accident. At least we weren’t sitting in traffic the whole time!
Once past the site of the accident (which wasn’t obstructing any lanes, by the way), we proceeded to the little mining town of Leadville. We met Tom and Laura at a gas station, and they led us down a dusty, rock-and-mini-boulder-covered road to a beautiful campsite near the water.
The rest of the weekend was full of great photo ops, lots of relaxing, and a walk down the road (which turned into a walk near the rapids / waterfall) which then literally turned into a walk up and then back down the road. Now that we know about the N. Half Moon Trailhead, that is on the list of hikes.
