Thoughts about Ubuntu 6.10 (Edgy)

After taking a 2 year break from Linux (well, maybe not that long), I thought that it was time to put my work laptop to good use and get myself a new distribution. This time, my distro of choice is Ubuntu 6.10, and it is definitely been a much more friendly experience than my other experiences with Linux.
The first thing I noticed about this distro is the community. If you are a new user to Ubuntu (or Linux in general), the first place you will want to turn after completing your installation is Ubuntu Guide. This guide is a great resource that can give an idea of what is available for Ubuntu, and also gives you the commands needed to complete installations.
The second thing I noticed is the wide array of new applications available since the last time I’ve checked out the Linux world. Aside from the popular apps available like Firefox and GIMP, I’m discovering some new web authoring applications that could easily break my dependence on Windows (if only iTunes would be released, then I would be almost 100% good to go on switching).
One final point about installing Linux. If you are using the partition utility included with Ubuntu, be careful when sizing NTFS volumes. I hosed my Windows installation after running a shrink operation (I didn’t really care, since I had only recently installed Windows and didn’t have anything valuable stored). The partition in question was NTFS, which may or may not be supported very well on your disro of choice.
