Identity Theft and Moronic Companies

Yep, yet another company had a computer stolen… a computer that had personal information (including social security numbers). The company, ACS, has had a history of theft of personal information in the past, including disks that contain the credit card numbers of people that used cards to pay parking charges at Denver International Airport.
Four laptops were stolen from Starbucks also. These laptops had employee information for 60,000 employees from 2003 (including Social Security numbers). The laptop was password protected, but that really wouldn’t comfort me with how easy passwords can be to break in certain situations.
What I am wondering is how screwups like this are allowed to happen. With all the security tools and methods out there, why is personal information being stored on desktops and laptops instead of servers? I seriously hope that companies wise up and only contract out to data providers that use servers in locked rooms. With stories like this, I’m not holding my breath.
